Treating Periodontal Disease

Periodontal (gum) disease is an ongoing, degenerative condition. Delaying treatment will never make periodontal disease go away.
With bone loss, teeth get loose and have to be removed, and you may end up wearing dentures. Treatment removes the infection and keeps the disease under control.

To diagnose signs and symptoms of periodontal disease, we perform a thorough periodontal consultation.

Treatment Coordination

Every time you see Dr. Kiurtsidis for a consultation, treatment, or a simple follow up visit, we send a detailed report letter describing the purpose and outcome of the appointment to your referring dentist.

Based on your periodontal needs and personal choices, we coordinate your treatment and work very closely with you and your other dental professionals.

Scaling and Root Planing

The treatment begins with scaling and root planing (also known as deep cleaning), and allows the infected gum tissue to heal and to form new, healthier attachments to the root surfaces.

We prescribe new home care techniques, more frequent dental cleanings, and may also prescribe antibiotics or an antimicrobial mouth rinse.

We will teach you how to use new tools, and give you the feedback to keep your gums and teeth healthy.

Surgical Treatment

In some cases we may also recommend periodontal surgery (pulling the gums back to gain proper access, re-sculpting the bone and gums, and placing several sutures to aid healing).
